So many people these days are tired, life can be stressful. But imagine feeling exhausted all the time, at a level where you’re finding it difficult, if not impossible, to function. This is chronic fatigue syndrome, an increasingly common chronic illness that is a mystery for most of the medical community. What is chronic fatigue syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome, CFS is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, or ME. The syndrome is characterized by a constant state of fatigue that debilitates the person, making it hard to live a normal life. CFS is a complex multi factorial condition that requires a multi-dimensional approach for treatment. What are the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome? Chronic fatigue syndrome is one of those chronic conditions that defies concise medical diagnosis as well as treatment. People suffering from CFS experience a level of exhaustion that affects their physical abilities, but especially their mental and emotional capabilities as well. Brain fog, muscle aches, pains, decreased sleep, night sweats or chills, headaches, depression, anxiety and irritability are all common with this condition. How is chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosed? There are no definitive tests for diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome. In fact, diagnosis is made from a conglomeration of various symptoms. The two main criteria are severity and duration. The symptoms must last for more than six months and other medical conditions have been ruled out. What is the treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome? According to the medical community, there is no cure or a specific treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome. Mostly they recommend lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and various cognitive behavioral techniques. What kind of therapy can be done for chronic fatigue syndrome? Contrary to popular belief, you can actually heal from CFS. In a small cohort study conducted in the early days of my chiropractic career we looked at 30 people suffering from this condition, and found that they all had one thing in common. They had all suffered, varying levels of childhood trauma (In some cases extreme). This lead us to realize that this condition greatly involves the nervous system and your ability to release and heal old traumas and stressors from your past. Trauma and chronic stress can hold the nervous system in a constant state of fight or flight which inhibits the body‘s natural ability to heal. If you’re constantly on hyper alert, waiting for the tiger, of course you’re gonna be tired! Here at this office, we have found that a combination of functional medicine to address the body needs along with Network and SRI to address the needs of the nervous system can produce amazing results. The most important thing is to realize you have the ability to heal. By taking your power back and re-programming your nervous system and your bodies responses, you can fully recover and lead a vital and active life again!
