One of the most significant and widespread underlying causes of disease is called systemic inflammation. What is systemic inflammation? Imagine if you sprained your ankle. Your ankle swells up and it hurts. This is a form of acute inflammation. Now imagine your whole body is swollen like that, chronically. Your cells, tissues, organs and nervous system, (think brain inflame!) for example. We find that this has a major impact on how your body and brain function. It also impacts the body’s ability to eliminate any accumulation of toxins you absorb through your environment. And we’re talking about toxins that exist in your food, water, and even your home - not just the ones that come with a warning sticker on their container. So what do we do? Depending on your Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio, (yes we can test for that), you should be taking a minimum of 3000 mg per day of high-quality fish oil. By high quality, I mean that it is molecularly distilled and has a ratio of EPA to DHA of 2 to 1 (The two main components of fish oil). Stay away from the cheap fish oils as they will likely contain many different forms of pollutants and will only wind up making things worse. It’s worth it to spend a little more and make sure you’re putting something clean in your body. Research has also shown taking fish oil daily has a tremendous effect on your brain health as well as your cardiovascular system. Both of these are major factors in the chronic disease trends we are seeing in America today think Alzheimer’s and heart disease. The ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 is so important that some researchers call it the “Theory of Everything”!
So given that an imbalance in Omega 6- Omega-3 is one of the main underlying causes of all disease and inflammation, what can we do about this? Well, just like the title says, Take your fish oil! Human beings evolved eating a diet of Omega-6 essential fatty acids to Omega-3 essential fatty acids in a ratio of roughly 4 to 1. These days, due to the increased prevalence of highly processed foods (which contain a lot of Omega 6 inflammatory vegetable oils) your average American is currently at a ratio of 25 to 1. Why is this significant? The research has conclusively found that when a person reaches a ratio of 15 to 1, they are guaranteed to develop some form of chronic debilitating illness. Take a look around at your friends, family and neighbors and you can have a deeper understanding of what’s going on with overall health in the United States right now. Thankfully, there is a simple way to address this problem and change these predicted health outcomes. All you have to do is take some high quality fish oil.
