Mental Health Awareness month: how do environmental toxins affect my mental health & wellbeing?5/8/2024
Hey everybody, Dr. Rick here, many of you may not know, this is National Mental Health Awareness Month, so let's talk about that. All right? The current state of mental health in this country is not the best as some of you may have guessed. There's increasing instances of anxiety, depression, numerous mental health disorders even affecting our kids very much, strongly and significantly. So what's going on with this and what's happening?
There's a bunch of things happening, right? Like most things, it's never just one thing. But one of the key factors that we're really looking at these days is the level of environmental toxicity. Yeah, you heard me right. Environmental toxicity. What does that stuff mean?
It means all the stuff that we're exposed to. to in our environment, such as glyphosate, otherwise known as roundup, such as whatever other pesticides you're exposed to, whether it's on your food or in your water, could be the pharmaceuticals that you're exposed to in your food or in your water. It could be any of the heavy metals or other toxins that are prevalent in our environment these days. Bottom line is our bodies have to work super hard to get rid of this stuff.
Now you take the level of environmental toxicity and then you can add on other levels of toxins like mycotoxins. Those are from mold and believe it or not, those are way more prevalent than you might think. And when we relate all this back to mental health, you may be like, "Dr. Rick, what are you talking about "environmental toxins for? "This is-- a mental health topic here." They're actually directly connected. We have a lot of evidence connecting the level of environmental toxicity in people's bodies and corresponding levels of what's going on with their mental health, whether it's anxiety, depression, for sure, but even to the point of where we're talking about things as extreme as schizophrenia. Even other extreme levels of disorders, those can be traced back to environmental toxins. Another environmental factor that we could talk about is the Omega -6 -3 ratio in your body. So omega -3s are essential fatty acids. It means you have to eat them. You can't make them inside your body like you do with most things. You have to consume them on some level and in some way. You should have roughly a balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 somewhere in the range of like 1 to 4, 1 to 3, something like that. Now we find there's a direct correlation between that ratio and people's behaviors and also their mental health. Such that the point is people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia often have an omega -6 to 3 ratio of 70 to 1. What? That's crazy. Even among veterinarians, they look at aggressive dogs, and they find that aggressive dogs and aggressive people, by the way, have a really high ratio of Omega -6 to Omega -3. We haven't even gone into some of the other topics here that we want to cover, and I think we're going to cover those in the later talks such as what's going on with our level of connectivity in the culture and our social connection. Uur neurology is wired up for social connection and I'm sorry to say, social media ain't cutting it. It's just one other aspect that's going on among many. So we'll discuss some more of these, the main thing I want to leave you with here is this is not a small thing. This has a huge impact on people's health and well -being and their overall quality of life. It's even studies showing that the greater level of anxiety or depression that you're experiencing in life can have a direct effect on how long you're going to live. So we want to talk about these things and we don't want to have some big stigma about it. There's nothing wrong or bad about it, about any of these things. We want to really discuss them openly as a culture, as a society, to help people so that we can get to the bottom of what's going on and really help people heal. This is a huge part of people's healing and in fact some of the studies I'm seeing saying that your nervous system, which includes your mental health, can be up to 60 to 70 percent of your overall healing. Even more than perhaps the medications or the supplements or the nutritional stuff. All those things are important, but isn't that a shocker? Your mental health and your nervous system is a key player in whether or not you're healthy. So I hope this gives you a few thoughts to kind of chew on. Think about it. Look into it. We're going to talk some more about it soon.

Sober living refers to a supportive, drug- and alcohol-free environment for individuals in recovery from addiction. These residences provide a structured setting where individuals can live while transitioning from a treatment program to independent living.
