Fall is definitely here, and winter is just around the corner. We have already had our first snow up in the mountains. One thing that seems to correlate with seasonality is the flu. There are a number of theories for this, and we will briefly touch on one of them. Another interesting factor is the incidence of Covid has been increasing again. Most of us remember the confusion and fear at the start of the pandemic. Now that the dust has settled, there are some interesting facts that have come to light. Most of the people who were seriously impacted by the Covid virus had numerous comorbidities. That is to say, they were seriously sick already. Another interesting factor that’s been discovered is that their levels of vitamin D3 in their blood were significantly lower than Functional Medicine recommends. Vitamin D is not only important for strong bones as we have so often been told but is also a primary immunomodulator. This means that it has a lot to do with the functioning of a healthy immune system. For people who are lower in vitamin D levels than 40 ng/mL, they showed an increased incidence of infection and severity of disease.
This information was known relatively early on in the pandemic, but for reasons unknown to me was not widely published. Bottom line is if you can get your vitamin D levels up in the 40 to 60 ng/ml sweet spot, you are statistically and significantly less likely to get the flu, Covid, or any infectious disease. This is a very simple and cheap solution to a worldwide problem. Vitamin D3 is readily available and very inexpensive. I strongly suggest you have your blood levels tested (Yes, we can do that!), and for most people, a dosage of 5000 IUs per day would be sufficient to bring your level up to 40 ng/mL. Too Simple? Try it and see for yourself. 😊
